If this is you: "I'm
adjusting to a new position, a new company and/or a new culture." here's
how I could help you...
The first few months in a new position can be
challenging. Why? You need to learn so many things, such as:
-
How
to do your new job; how to meet expectations, requirements and targets; how
to use new skills that your new job requires.
-
How
to work with new people including your boss, subordinates, colleagues and
customers. This is especially complicated in a matrix, networked
multinational organization.
-
How
to rebuild all the parts of your working life that give you your confidence,
such as your job capability, reputation, connections, support, knowledge, and
sense of belonging. The faster you do this, the quicker you'll enjoy your
new job and start producing excellent results.
-
How
to operate most effectively in a new company, regional or national culture.
The people in your new environment may be surprisingly unaware of the
culture they operate in, since they have not experienced the culture you
came from. Therefore, you will have to figure out a lot of the differences
yourself and learn how to adjust.
-
How
to make the most of your strengths at work so that you can feel fulfilled
and be at your best. Hopefully, you've chosen your new job in part because
it is closer to your preferences. However, aligning yourself and your job
takes time and greater self-awareness. The first few months in your new job
is the best time to clarify what you want and set expectations with your
colleagues.
The good news is that change is always an
excellent opportunity to learn and grow. Career coaching is a service ideally suited
to support people in this position. Here's how:
Step one:
I listen very very well so that YOU can more
thoroughly understand the situation you are facing. You can talk openly to me
about anything without fear that anyone else will find out, and knowing that I
will always accept you and give my honest response. By listening very well,
I will help you reflect more effectively and learn faster.
Step two:
I ask questions from a different perspective
so that you can see the situation in ways you hadn't considered before. I
support, endorse, encourage and challenge you in the way YOU choose that
supports you best.
Step three:
I openly share my feedback and past experience
that is relevant to you and I make positive suggestions based on my understanding of
careers, management, culture and human behaviour. I will share relevant advice
from the latest literature on job change and culture change. Currently, my favourite
book on this topic is The First 90 Days, by Michael
Watkins.
Step four:
I help you focus on taking actions that move
you forward.

"You've really helped me to turn
things around. Now I'm making an effort to do things and speak up positively
for what I want. You put some points in my head that really helped, especially
'What are you going to do about it?'"

Even
though I was talking to Angela about my problems, all the solutions were
coming out of my mouth. I found it very empowering. I might have overcome my problems
without a coach, but not within months. It might have taken years to sort out
the root of my problems"

My experience with career transition
coaching:
I've had some wonderful clients who hired me to
help them be successful in their new management positions, for example, a newly
promoted manager in a finance company and a new General Manager in the
pharmaceuticals industry. I've also had some clients who hired me to get them
out of the mess they found themselves in after failing to adjust well to their
new position. For example, you can read a sad story here
about one expatriate man who I coached.
I've been coaching in Hong Kong since 2000,
have worked with more than 200 people, and if we click, I'm sure I could help
you too.

"Angela's
cheerful nature with her warm and friendly attitude facilitated me to express
my inner feelings and frustrations comfortably though I have known her for a
very short time. She was sensitive and patient in helping me to articulate my
problems so as to figure out some solutions. Apart from attentive listening,
she was able to give me insightful advice, suggestions and encouragement at
appropriate times. I appreciate that she has never imposed her ideas on me but
provided alternative perspectives for my reference. In three months' time, I
have achieved certain goals set up during our coaching sessions and am in a
better shape personally."

"I found Angela to be an excellent
coach. She has a great skill at listening, and at getting to the heart of the
matter. She made valuable suggestions for change, and pushed me beyond my own
limits to take action quickly. Through coaching, I was able to make some
dramatic changes in both my personal and professional life."
